The story of the Saracens from the earliest times to the fall of Bagdad (1887) - Arthur Gilman

When the Greeks and Romans mentioned the tribes that ranged the desserts west of the euphrates, they called them Saracens.a name of which no philologist has yet given the signification.perhaps it meant "The people of the desert," from the Arabic Sahara, a desert;or "The people of the east," The rising sun".
After this name had been used in an indefinite manner for all the unknown tribes of the desert,it was given to the followers of Prophet Muhammad; and it is used in that sense in the following pages, thus comprising many different nations, scattered at times from the atlantic to the pacific.
